Microsoft is said to be in talks to acquire Yammer, a professional social media company, for more than $1 billion as early as Friday, according to a report.

Rumors of the acquisition began after a Twitter user in San Francisco tweeted that she had overheard in a coffee shop that Microsoft had acquired Yammer.

Since then, the official comment from both companies is a "no comment," but Bloomberg on Thursday reported that two people familiar with the matter said Microsoft and Yammer -- whichdescribes itself as a "private social network for your company" -- were discussing the acquisition.

Yammer has seen its share of success since being launched in 2008 by David Sacks, PayPal's former chief operating officer. The company is used by more than 200,000 companies, among them Ford and EBay, and it's raised more than $140 million in funding.

The deal would make sense for Microsoft, whose office software programs are part of its main business. Adding an enterprise social network would fit right in.

Yammer offers its basic service for free and charges $5 per user per month for its premium service, which offers administrative controls, security tools and other features, according to PCMag.
